"A broken water main sent water cascading down McTavish St., literally sweeping pedestrians off their feet, and flooded several buildings on the McGill campus Monday afternoon.
University authorities warned students and staff to move computers and documents out of harm's way and to get themselves to safety.
"The University is trying to assess damage as best it can, but it will be extensive," McGill said in a statement on the university website.
Workers upgrading century-old water pipes near the McTavish reservoir pierced the main, said city spokesperson Philippe Sabourin.
The university cancelled evening classes as public-works employees rushed to the scene to repair the break.
